Restoration of teardrop angle (TDA) in distal radius fractures treated with volar locking plates

چکیده
Distal radius fractures are common fractures of the upper extremity, estimated to account for one-sixth of all fractures seen and treated in emergency rooms.1-3 These fractures are seen in a bimodal age distribution and usually result from a low-energy trauma. Displaced fractures involving the articular surface of the distal radius have the worst prognosis because of the potential for incongruity and arthrosis of the radiocarpal and distal radio-ulnar joints.4 On plain radiographs, Robert Medoff5 introduced the teardrop angle (TDA), which is a radiographic parameter that gives information on the congruity of the lunate facet. This is measured as the angle formed between the central axis of the teardrop and the radial shaft. Although many surgeons are unaware of this parameter, it is important because an abnormal TDA can herald the presence of articular incongruity of the lunate facet. Abstract

Distal radius measurements and efficacy of fixed-angle locking volar plates.
AIM For surgical treatment of unstable distal radius fractures, fixed-angled locking volar plate fixation is becoming popular nowadays because of some advantages over other surgical techniques. In this article, we discuss the fitting of fixed-angle locking volar plates to the distal radius in relation to the changes in the distal radial angles. MATERIALS AND METHODS First, we took conventiona...
متن کاملSurgical Treatment of Unstable Distal Radius Fractures With a Volar Variable-Angle Locking Plate: Clinical and Radiological Outcomes
BACKGROUND Unstable distal end radius fractures are difficult to manage and so various treatment modalities have been described. The use of variable-angle locking plates is promoted for the management of these fractures. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the functional and radiological outcomes in unstable distal end radius fractures treated with variable-angle locking plates. PATIENT...
متن کاملComplications and Plate Removal Surgeries after Performing Volar Plating of Unstable Distal Radius Fractures
Complications have often been reported in the literature after distal radius fractures treated conservatively or operatively [1-3]. Previously, the main indication for volar plating was a volar Barton or Smith fracture, but now volar locking plates are the most commonly used treatment for unstable distal radius fractures and during the last decade this method has become increasingly popular [4]...
متن کاملA revolution in the management of fractures of the distal radius?
The recent development of locking-plate technology has led to a potential revolution in the management of fractures of the distal radius. This review examines the evidence for pursuing anatomical restoration of the distal radius and the possible advantages and pitfalls of using volar locking plates to achieve this goal. The available evidence for adopting volar locking plates is presented and a...
متن کاملDorsally Comminuted Fractures of the Distal End of the Radius: Osteosynthesis with Volar Fixed Angle Locking Plates
Background. Dorsally comminuted distal radius fractures are unstable fractures and represent a treatment challenge. The objective of this study was to evaluate the functional and radiological outcome of dorsally comminuted fractures of the distal radius fixed with a volar locking plate. Patients and Methods. Thirty-three consecutive patients with dorsally comminuted fractures of the distal end ...
